Amazon’s Robot Army: Inside the Automation Revolution That Could Replace 600,000 Jobs by 2033
Amazon’s Robot Army: Welcome to the Warehouse of Tomorrow (Humans not included)
Amazon is planning a massive automation push that could replace 600,000 jobs humans would have had, with robots by 2033, according to internal documents obtained by The New York Times. The scale is staggering! That’s more than making Home Depot’s entire 470,000-person workforce disappear.
The e-commerce giant, America’s third-largest employer behind the federal government and Walmart, has used warehouse robots heavily for over a decade. However, leaked documents suggest a significant acceleration in the strategy, attempting to automate 75% of warehouse operations over the coming years. Using robots, Amazon can avoid hiring new workers to meet demand growth rather than triggering mass layoffs of existing staff. By 2027 alone, Amazon would need another estimated 160,000 roles. By 2033, the number is slated to be around 600,000.
Word Games: The internal documents reportedly reveal Amazon’s sensitivity about optics. Plans include building an image as a good corporate citizen. More tellingly, documents suggest avoiding terms like “automation” and “AI” in favour of “advanced technology,” and replacing “robot” with “cobot” to imply collaboration rather than replacement.
Amazon Pushes Back: In a statement to The Verge, an Amazon spokesperson reportedly said, “Leaked documents often paint an incomplete and misleading picture of our plans, and that’s the case here. In our written narrative culture, thousands of documents circulate throughout the company at any given time, each with varying degrees of accuracy and timeliness.”
The tension between automation economics and the employment impact isn’t new, but the scale that Amazon is reportedly mulling is eye-opening.
Amazon and other companies will counter that efficiency gains fund new investment in “higher-paying positions” and worker upskilling. Let’s be real, though. Those higher-paying positions likely number in the thousands, not hundreds of thousands. The question isn’t whether this future arrives; it is when.
Upward momentum in Amazon has dissipated rapidly in recent months. A bigger corrective pullback towards $200 looks to be underway now.
Carpe Diem
