It’s not over until “someone sings” AWE (ASX:AWE) is the recipient of another unsolicited takeover offer, with Japanese trading giant Mitsui & Co (Mitsui) placing an all cash bid on the table. This new bid follows on from offers made by China Energy Reserve and Chemical Group (CERCG) and Mineral Resources to acquire the company. Both these bids remain open, with the AWE Board recommending, in the absences of a higher bid, the Mineral Resources proposal. The following figure shows the

Ahead at the halfway mark Saracen Minerals (ASX:SAR) continues to enjoy a kick in gold production from its two operating mines in Carosue Dam and Thunderbox, following the release of its December quarter operational results. A December quarter record was set for gold production while all-in sustaining costs continue to improve. The company remains on track to come-in ahead of 2018 guidance, which was left unchanged post the December quarter result. The following chart shows quarterly gold production: Source: Saracen Minerals (ASX:SAR) Gold

Taking the wheel Real estate agent McGrath (ASX:MEA) did not have a happy time of it in 2017, with revenues and earnings under pressure on the back of a low level of listing volumes, and compounded by key high profile departures. This ultimately culminated in a profit warning for FY18 which we covered off in our last review. Source: Company Presentation Pressure has certainly been made to bear on management, and for founder John McGrath and his Board who have had a baptism

Waiting for Health Results Shares in Blackmores Limited (ASX:BKL) have been one of the best performers on the market in recent months, having surged over 70% since bottoming in August. We have avoided the shares previously, but revisit the case for the vitamin company, and following developments in the infant milk formula sector. What’s New? As recap, we previously covered Blackmores as a company of interest in our Special Report on “The Infant Milk Formula sector” at the end of March 2017 (FAT-AUS-816). We

Fat Prophets take Profits International jeweller Michael Hill International (MHJ:ASX, MHJ:NZX) recently provided trading updates that highlight significant changes for the group. The first being a shift into new markets that will lead to growth pains while the company is also exiting a sizable and important market in the US. We have already taken some profits on Michael Hill, banking a 66% gain in the process, and we believe this to be the opportune time to close out the rest of

Clearing the Decks QBE Insurance (ASX:QBE) announced another profit warning last week, citing an expected US$1.2 billion loss for FY17. The stock was weak in trading immediately following the announcement, but has since traded modestly higher. With a new CEO at the helm of the insurer, it appears investors are taking the view that this ‘clearing of the decks’ likely represents a loss that is about as bad as it will get for the company; paving the way for a recovery

Putting the Pieces Together in the Right Space From a thematic perspective, we like Australia’s growing financial services industry as a pool to fish in for investment ideas. Deloitte has forecast Australia’s superannuation system can hit $9.5 trillion in size by 2035, representing an impressive annual compound growth rate of 8.1%. IOOF Holdings (ASX:IFL) deal to acquire ANZ Bank’s wealth management business late last year will see it well positioned to grab a bigger slice of the industry revenue opportunity going

In for a solid 2018 A recent report published by the World Bank is optimistic on 2018 with the global economy set to grow at a faster pace than year. In Asia, expectations are slightly muted due to expectations of a slowdown in China. Nevertheless, there are signs that a surprise to the upside is in the wind elsewhere in the region, with growth likely to impress on the back of robust domestic and international demand. Accordingly, we retain a bullish view
